Measuring the impact of global research and development investment in product development partnerships: a case study on return on investment in antimalarial drug development
Product development partnerships (PDPs) are non-profit organisations that bridge the gap between the need for new treatments for poverty-related diseases and the resources available to develop them, leveraging a mix of public, philanthropic, multilateral, and private sector funding. We aimed to calculate two financial metrics to estimate the return on investments of drugs developed by the PDP Medicines for Malaria Venture (MMV) as a case study.

India calls for deeper cooperation in R&D, biotech, pharma with Switzerland
New Delhi: India on Thursday called for deeper cooperation in research and development, biotechnology, specialty pharmaceuticals and advanced therapeutics with Switzerland with an aim to further strengthen economic ties between the two countries. In the context of the AI Impact Summit, both sides acknowledged the need to balance innovation with responsibility and noted that TEPA offers significant opportunities for technology collaboration in areas such as precision engineering, health sciences, renewable energy, innovation and research and development. India and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) last year implemented the trade and economic partnership agreement (TEPA). From farmers and fishermen to forest dwellers, workers, women, youth, small businesses, and professionals, TEPA has opened doors to new opportunities and a brighter economic future, the commerce ministry said."

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) moves seamlessly across human health, animal health, agriculture, and the environment. Legal Preparedness: Why One Health and the Fight Against AMR in the U.S. Takes More Than Science," explores why durable progress on AMR requires more than technical guidance or innovation. It requires governance systems underpinned by strong legal and policy foundations that are designed to work together across sectors and levels of government before crises emerge. The piece unpacks: Why policy without legal authority often stalls Why laws that ignore operational realities go unused How legal preparedness bridges the gap between One Health theory and practice in the U.S. Science tells us what needs to be done to address AMR."

Danaher closes in on nearly $10 billion deal for Masimo, FT reports
Feb 16 (Reuters) - Life sciences firm Danaher (DHR.N), opens new tab is closing in on a nearly $10 billion deal to acquire pulse oximeter maker Masimo (MASI.O), opens new tab, the Financial Times reported on Monday, citing sources. Masimo, which has been in a long legal battle with iPhone maker Apple (AAPL.O), opens new tab over patents, has a market capitalization of about $7 billion, while Danaher is valued at over $150 billion, according to Reuters calculations. A federal jury in California in November ruled that Apple owed Masimo $634 million for infringing a patent covering blood-oxygen reading technology. Masimo made a $1-billion acquisition of audio products maker Sound United in early 2022, leading to a bitter proxy battle with activist hedge fund Politan Capital Management, and ended with the ouster of founder Joe Kiani as CEO in 2024.

Launch ceremony of BE READY, the European Partnership for Pandemic Preparedness. Paris, 17 February 2026
BE READY: Building Europe's capacity to anticipate and respond to infectious emerging diseases Launched on 1 January 2026, BE READY is a ten-year European Partnership for Pandemic Preparedness that brings together partners from 27 European Member States and Associated countries and the European Commission. To achieve this, the partnership will accelerate research to develop and evaluate medical countermeasures - including diagnostics, therapeutics and vaccines - and produce timely data to inform public health decision-making.At its core, BE READY seeks to build a resilient European research and innovation ecosystem that is continuously prepared for health crises caused by infectious diseases. By bringing together national funders, research institutions and European bodies under a shared long-term vision, BE READY transforms how Europe organises and governs research for epidemic and pandemic preparedness. Turning preparedness into action: How BE READY works To strengthen Europe's ability to anticipate and respond to infectious disease threats, BE READY developed its Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda (SRIA), in order to provide a common guidance tool to participating countries for advancing knowledge in pandemic preparedness. This continuity is essential to accelerate evidence production and support timely public health decisions." BE READY pursues three main goals: Align national research priorities and scientific expertise across participating countries through the Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda, Support multinational research projects through Joint Transnational Calls, advancing the SRIA-defined research priorities while minimising duplication (discover here the first joint transnational call, launched on 19 January 2026), Build an integrated ecosystem of research infrastructures and networks, featuring a European "ever-warm" clinical research network maintained between crises and swiftly mobilised during outbreaks."

Europe should rethink innovation procurement, says senior Commission aide
Public bodies in the EU need to be reassured that it is safe to buy innovative solutions from start-ups, according to Manuel Aleixo, a senior aide to research Commissioner Ekaterina Zaharieva. Innovation procurement is often the first port of call, the first customer for innovative companies," Aleixo said during a webinar organised by the Norwegian University of Science and Technology on February 11. "As we see in the US, [it] functions very much as a demand lever for innovation and for start-ups." According to European Commission data, innovation procurement amounts to 20% of all procurement in the US, driven by the federal government. "Anybody [."

Roche opens new high-tech innovation center for 300 million euros in Bavaria
In future, a good 1,000 of the site's approximately 7,700 employees will find a new home for the diagnostics research and development of the future on an area the size of three soccer pitches. The Innovation Center was officially inaugurated on 12 February 2026 in the presence of Minister President Markus Söder, Federal Minister of the Interior Alexander Dobrindt, Federal Minister of Research, Technology and Space Dorothee Bär, Thomas Schinecker, CEO of the Roche Group and the management of Roche's German sites. The high level of automation and digital networking in the new building is continued in the spatial design: instead of traditional departmental structures, Roche relies on process-based laboratory environments in which teams work more closely together across departmental boundaries and share equipment. Intelligent energy management and the use of existing energy and supply systems at the site - such as the use of a low-temperature network from waste heat or a photovoltaic system with a total electrical output of 130 kilowatts on the roof of the building - enable CO₂-free operation.
