Measuring the impact of global research and development investment in product development partnerships: a case study on return on investment in antimalarial drug development
Product development partnerships (PDPs) are non-profit organisations that bridge the gap between the need for new treatments for poverty-related diseases and the resources available to develop them, leveraging a mix of public, philanthropic, multilateral, and private sector funding. We aimed to calculate two financial metrics to estimate the return on investments of drugs developed by the PDP Medicines for Malaria Venture (MMV) as a case study.

Fraunhofer boosts its spin-out 'transmission belt' fund by €90M
Germany's leading applied research organisation, the Fraunhofer Society, is giving its spin-out fund a boost, with a planned capitalisation of €90 million. The fund will also be opened up to the country's other research organisations. The new TT49 fund builds on a previous Fraunhofer Technology Transfer Fund, offering pre-seed funding to spin-outs in all technology fields, except for drug research, which is considered too costly and time-intensive.

Expand funding for proof-of-concept grants, UK review recommends
A new review of the UK's university spin-out system says the country hugely underinvests in proof-of-concept funding for new ideas emerging from labs, and recommends the creation of a £100 million fund to plug the gap. The analysis, commissioned by the country's main public funder, UK Research and Innovation, comes however at a time of strained science budgets and university finances, which could limit the country's ability to reform its system. The UK's university spin-out scene is generally seen as ahead of that in the EU. The country is second only to the US when it comes to raising money from venture capitalists, for example.

EU plans to speed up funding for defence technologies
The European Commission will propose a new pilot instrument to accelerate the time to market of defence technologies in the next month," the annual Science|Business conference heard on February 5. "For the first time, instead of having three or four years from call to conclusion, it will be six to 12 months," said Michalis Ketselidis, senior expert for defence industry and space at the European Commission. The initiative, called Agile, was first announced in the Commission's defence industry roadmap adopted in November 2025. At the time, defence Commissioner Andrius Kubilius said Agile would support single companies "to develop low-cost production in a very rapid manner," as opposed to the European Defence Fund, which supports collaborative projects."

CARB-X funds development of rapid test for typhoid fever
CARB-X announced today that it's awarding Chembio Diagnostic Systems $1.8 million to support the development of a rapid, finger stick–based diagnostic test for typhoid fever. The money will help Chembio, of Medford, New York, develop a blood-based point-of-care test, using its proprietary Dual Path Platform, that can detect acute infection caused by Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi based on the presence of immunoglobulin A (IgA) antibodies. Could be good news for lower-income nations A rapid, fingerstick-based test that delivers reliable results at the point of care could significantly improve how typhoid fever is diagnosed in low- and middle-income countries, where access to laboratory infrastructure is often limited," Richard Alm, PhD, interim chief of research & development at CARB-X (Combating Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria Biopharmaceutical Accelerator), said in a press release. "If successful, Chembio's diagnostic capability can support better clinical decision-making, strengthen surveillance and stewardship efforts, and contribute to more effective management of enteric fever in high-burden settings." Since its founding in 2016, CARB-X has funded 122 projects designed to prevent, treat, and diagnose antibiotic-resistant infections."
